About the Book

Maud Booth's seminal defense and exploration of The Salvation Army's formative years is given new life in this deluxe non-facsimile version of her classic 1889 work Beneath Two Flags. Filled with examples of the Army's methods, anecdotes from its workers, and numerous testimonies from those brought to saving faith by its mission, it is both a glimpse of a parachurch organization at the height of its powers, and a noteworthy example of how social service and evangelism can work together to change the world. This new version also includes a foreword by Robert Jeffery, MDiv, Director of the Heritage Museum for The Salvation Army's USA Eastern Territory.

About the Author :
Maud Ballington Booth (1865-1948) was one of the first leaders of The Salvation Army. She, along with her husband Ballington Booth (son of General William Booth), commanded The Salvation Army in the United States in the 1890s. Maud also cofounded Volunteers of America. Her place in history as an organized ministry pioneer, prison reformer and writer of books on parachurch ministry is unquestioned. Robert Jeffery, MDiv is the director of the Heritage Museum for The Salvation Army's USA Eastern Territory. The museum is located in West Nyack, New York, and is a repository for Salvation Army artifacts and archives. The museum is open to the public year-round and charges no admission. Rob is also from Nova Scotia, Canada, is a lifelong Salvationist and has worked for The Salvation Army in Canada and the United States since 2009. He is married with four children, and resides in Nyack, New York.

Review :
"Mrs. Booth proves herself an able advo-cate. Of her entire earnestness there can be no doubt. She writes in a straightforward way. . . . She defends in vigorous, dignified language the methods of The Salvation Army." -The Sun, New York City "Written in beautiful style, is healthful in tone, and is full of valuable information." -C. H. Briggs, DD, Professor of Hebrew and Cognate Languages, Union Theological Seminary "I have read with increas-ing interest from title page to finish Mrs. Maud B. Booth's wonderful book Beneath Two Flags, and want heartily to commend its attentive perusal to all who would learn the history and work of The Salvation Army. I have been instructed and inspired by reading the book." -General Clinton B. Fisk, former Presidential Candidate (1888) "Both explana-tion and apology, and she writes with a sincerity and winningness which cannot fail to make the reader more kindly disposed towards the strange bands of revivalists." -The New York Herald "I am familiar, to some extent, with the methods of The Salvation Army . . . . I think the book, Beneath Two Flags by Maud B. Booth, a fair statement." -John Hall, DD, Pastor, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City "A profoundly devout and suggestive record of timely and courageous Christian work." -Joseph Cook "The story of The Salvation Army-a story which can never be less than one of the most striking episodes in the history of evangelical Christianity for the latter half of the nineteenth century. The book cannot fail to do good wherever it is read. It has done me good, and I thank the author for it." -William Cleaver Wilkinson, DD, Professor of Poetry and Criticism, University of Chicago
