About the Book

No one said growing up was gonna be easy. Anna begins high school with a longing to experience her first true love. It seems likely after she falls for fellow sophomore Pete, but when a popular senior aggressively pursues her, she finds herself forced to choose...until Pete does it for her and she winds up in the arms of the upperclassman. Alec's attention is thrilling and dizzying, but she's conflicted when he pressures her to go all the way. When the unthinkable happens, Anna is left numb and lost. As she works through her confusion and fear, a second chance with Pete-and true love for real-emerges. Anna plunges in but pressures to fit in, combined with her own emotional fragility, lead her down turbulent paths-and increasing non-parent-approved choices. Boy troubles. Friend fallouts. Peer pressures. Unreasonable parents. Heartbreaking betrayals. Will Anna overcome...or spiral into the abyss?

Review :
Falling is "hella" accurate in its depiction of high school life in the late 1970s and early '80s. While the primary audience for Katherine Cobb's novel is teens, it is equally as entertaining to adults who came of age during that era. Fashion and music references, in particular, were appreciated by this 50-something reviewer. Cobb's dialogue brings back the youthful spirit, joy, angst and seemingly insurmountable drama of high school. While set in California, the story of life inside and outside the walls of Skyline High could have taken place anywhere in the United States, making it universally relatable. The main character's journal entries endearingly capture her frustrations, confusion and fear as she works from being low on the social totem pole to a rising star; handles love and jealousy; dabbles in danger; and makes decisions that change her life forever. Many of the issues faced by teens in Falling mirror those of today's young people: pressure to use drugs and alcohol, sexual expectations, infidelity, pregnancy, irritation with parents and friendship struggles. Cobb weaves a believable tale that is both entertaining and cautionary, then caps it with an exclamation point that makes it more meaningful than readers would have expected. -M. Partington, journalist Anna Trapani is starting her sophomore year of high school in 1978. What ensues is an explicit, authentic, true-to-life coming-of-age story. Anna struggles, as many of us have, with following her own morals/beliefs and giving into the pressure put on you by your peers. Anna quickly learns the hard lesson (that no girl should ever have to learn) of putting yourself into dangerous situations and consent. Heartbreaking yet graphically honest and raw, I believe it is a lesson all young girls experience to varying degrees, and at some point. This book... brought back a flood of memories...and was the ultimate walk down memory lane, but without the shiny, watered down, cleaned-up fairytale version many give us! Somewhere I got lost in the story and forgot that this was the late seventies, early eighties. Timeless! This book delves into the raw yet realistic subjects of peer pressure, consent, sex, drugs, and emotional abuse. There is no sugar coating it, this is real life. Great read for adults and mature teens. -Erin, The Reading Cafe In FALLING, author Katherine Cobb takes us back to the not-so-innocent 1970s where young love, peer pressure, and parental confines lead a young girl down dangerous paths. Anna begins her sophomore year of high school anxious and excited to make new friends and meet boys. Especially meet boys. Her beauty and flirtatiousness turn more than a few heads, but she quickly learns that choosing Mr. Right can come with unexpected consequences. Cobb expertly weaves humor, heartbreak, and trauma in this coming of age tale. With its fast-paced plot, sharp dialogue, and loads of nostalgia, I couldn't put it down. Her afterword courageously tells her own story of abuse and addiction and is a must-read for parents and young adults. I will definitely be sharing it with my daughters. -Cathy Baldau, author of Thoughts & Prayers "Cobb explores the hard issues of coming of age: love, sex, consent, choice, abuse and addiction. Read this book with a friend. You will want to talk about it." -Viqui Dill, blogger
