Math Mammoth Grade 5-B Worktext is the student book for the second half of grade 5 and part of the Math Mammoth Grade 5 complete curriculum. This is the Canadian version which means the book uses mostly metric units is formatted to letter size and large numbers are formatted with a space (e.g. 214 000). However keep in mind that the "Grade 5" refers to the U.S. grade 5 and corresponds roughly to Canadian school system's year 6. Please note: The book doesn't include the answer key. Answer keys for grade 5 are sold in a separate book.
The main areas of study in this Grade 5-B worktext are operations with decimals fraction arithmetic (all operations with fractions) and geometry (review of angles area and perimeter; drawing circles; classifying triangles & quadrilaterals; volume of rectangular prisms).
In chapter 5 we study graphing in the coordinate grid line graphs and average. Today's world has become increasingly complex with lots of data presented in the media so our children need a good grasp of statistical graphs to be able to make sense of all of that information.
Chapter 6 continues our study of decimals. The focus is on multiplying decimals by decimals dividing decimals by decimals and conversions between measuring units.
Chapter 7 covers the addition and subtraction of fractions - another topic of focus for 5th grade besides decimals. The most difficult topic of this chapter is adding and subtracting unlike fractions which is done by first converting them to equivalent fractions with a common denominator.
In chapter 8 we study the multiplication and division of fractions from various angles. Chapter 9 takes us to geometry starting with a review of angles and polygons. From there students will learn to draw circles to classify triangles and quadrilaterals and the concept of volume in the context of right rectangular prisms (boxes).
About the Author :
Maria Miller was born and grew up in Finland where she also received a master's degree in mathematics in 1997. She loves math and teaching, so becoming a math teacher was a natural career for her. Miller started writing math books in 2002, prompted by her experiences in tutoring homeschooled children. She felt the books they were using were inferior, especially when it came to conceptual understanding of mathematics, so she began to write books that focus on the concepts and the "why" of mathematics, though not forgetting the "how" and the needful practice. Over the years, her materials have become popular and appreciated, both among parents and teachers. My kids have been using Math Mammoth for two years now. My oldest daughter did both 4th and 5th grade light blue series these past two years. We do the Woodcock Johnson test where they put your subjects at grade levels and at the end of fourth grade her overall mathematics was at the level of 6.4 grade (with applied real world problem at 8th grade). This year at the end of 5th grade she was at 10.9 grade for overall mathematics (with applied real world problems at grade 17.9- that is she is on level with college students ending their first year of grad school) Our assessor was so impressed and said she was doing math by hand correctly that most adults cannot do. Everything she has learned these past two years have come from Math Mammoth. Thank you so much for making such a great math program that has allowed my daughter (who according to her hates math) to excel!

I just want to say thank you so much for your Math Mammoth curriculum and videos. I have homeschooled for about 18 years now, 3 children. I have used so many different materials over the years and never fell in love with any of them, always found that the curriculum was incomplete and out of balance in some way. I love your curriculum. I love your videos. I think you have great balance with explanation, practice, theory, etc. I really appreciate your links and your videos.
