About the Book

Do you ever feel like you're going through the motions of your faith, burdened by requirements and rituals, yet still searching for peace and assurance?Millions of faithful Catholics feel a deep love for God, but wrestle with a quiet sense of spiritual fatigue. They live in fear of mortal sin, wonder about their standing with God, and hope they're doing enough to one day escape purgatory and earn heaven. If this feels familiar, When the Roman Bough Breaks sounds a peal of hope: this is not the life of faith Christ intended for you! This book embarks on a compelling journey, drawing together extensive published research and investigative journalism to pull back the curtain on a history many have never been told. It examines how the simple, grace-filled movement of the early apostles evolved into a powerful, institutional monarchy. You'll explore: The Complex History of the Papacy: Discover the often-shocking and turbulent history of the popes and how it shaped the Church we know today. The Changing Church: Discover how core doctrines-from Purgatory to Papal Infallibility-were developed centuries after Christ for reasons of power and politics, and how broadly things have changed over time. A System in Crisis: Understand the devastating, centuries-long consequences of priestly celibacy and the secrets hidden behind Vatican walls. While these truths may be challenging, the heart of this book is an invitation to discover the incredible freedom of the New Covenant and the original Gospel preached by the apostles, including: The True Meaning of Forgiveness: Grasp the life-changing reality of God's complete, permanent, one-time forgiveness that was accomplished at the cross. The Power of Grace: Understand how you have already been made righteous and holy in God's eyes, not by your performance, but by His unmerited gift. A Life of Assurance: Find lasting peace by resting in the security of Christ's finished work, freeing you from the fear of punishment and the anxiety of trying to check all the boxes. If you are ready to embark on a vibrant relationship with Jesus, this book is your welcome guide. It's an invitation to experience the profound joy and unshakable security that is your free gift in Christ. Discover the simple, powerful Gospel that can truly set you free.

Review :
"A passionate historical and theological survey, a fresh contribution. A plea to Catholics to return to the original, unadulterated gospel that stands out for the breadth of its approach." -Foreword Clarion Reviews "A thought-provoking exploration of the divergence between the early Church and modern practices, this book sheds light on the profound transformations within Catholicism over the centuries. Nottingham expertly articulates the richness of the original teachings, contrasting them with the current institutional practices that often obscure their essence. With clarity and depth, the narrative emphasizes the necessity of returning to the foundational tenets of faith, urging readers to embrace grace over self-reliance in the pursuit of salvation. An essential read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of their faith." -James K Wicks, MA Counseling Psychology, Christian Counselor "A passionate and well-researched contribution." -IBPA Book Award Judge "Much time, research, and prayer has gone into this compilation. Jeff Nottingham questions the influences of the Roman Catholic Church and provides answers as he progresses through the history of the Church and Christ's teaching . . . [It] can be emotionally shaking as Jeff uncovers the realities that lay the foundation for the Roman Catholic Church . . . [but he then] offers hope and the pathway to God. -Dr. Ronda Brady, Ed.D., Author, and Graduate Professor at Bryan College
