About the Book

Russell Avery needs a story to tell. The laid-off reporter turned private investigator is almost out of clients after he stood up against the Newark police officers whose problems he used to fix for a paycheck, exposing a scandal that left him on the wrong side of one of those thin blue lines. Desperate for work, Russell is as elated as he is skeptical when a detective shows up on his doorstep, asking him to look into one of the Brick City's most haunting mysteries: The Twilight Four killings. The detective tells Russell a story almost too good to be true, but maybe good enough to save his otherwise doomed journalism career if it is true. Supposedly, the wrong man was convicted in the brutal arson-murders that claimed four teenagers' lives, and if Russell finds the right one, he'll have the inside track on the kind of story that most reporters stake their careers on. But things worth knowing don't make themselves easy to find. As Russell starts untangling the complications of a decades-old murder that never even had a crime scene to start from, he runs into opposition from City Hall and finds himself drug into the middle of a contentious Mayoral race that could impact Newark for generations to come, all while trying to stay one step ahead of the real Twilight Four killer, who wouldn't mind reducing Russell to ash. In the sequel to the critically acclaimed LINE OF SIGHT, Russell Avery must once again try to figure out the definition of justice in a city where that term rarely applies to those who live below the poverty line.

Praise for ALL THESE ASHES “James Queally takes the skills he has acquired as an award-winning journalist and puts them to devastating use as an author.” –S.A. Cosby, bestselling author of Blacktop Wasteland and Razorblade Tears "Outstanding ...Queally gets all the details right while populating the plot with believable characters." ―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) "Queally, himself a former crime reporter for the Star-Ledger in New Jersey, brings both reporting expertise and novelistic flair to this second Avery mystery. Absorbing throughout." ―Booklist (Starred Review) "Intricately plotted...Fans of Brad Parks’s “Carter Ross” crime series, also set in Newark, will appreciate Queally’s latest story featuring reporter-turned-investigator Avery." ―Library Journal “An elegant, fierce, and totally gripping thriller. Queally is one of the most exciting voices in crime fiction." —Julia Dahl, author of The Missing Hours Outstanding praise for LINE OF SIGHT “LINE OF SIGHT signals the start of a great career. Veteran journalist James Queally brings all his insider knowledge of the intersections of crime and police and politics and media in a story that never stands still for a single page. It’s an amazing first novel.” ―Michael Connelly, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Harry Bosch series "A knockout debut. Smart, gritty and as timely as tomorrow's front page." ―Riley Sager, New York Times bestselling author of LOCK EVERY DOOR "(An) impressive fiction debut ...This scalding exposé of human failures, in which friendships go tragically sour, powerfully updates Raymond Chandler’s mean streets. Queally is definitely a writer to watch." ―Publishers Weekly Starred Review "The use-of-force theme is sadly contemporary, and Queally knows all the players and their world: cops, lawyers, guns, and the drug trade. An excellent debut from a strong new voice in crime fiction.” ――Booklist (Starred Review) "James Queally draws on current events, and his own experience as a crime reporter, to write LINE OF SIGHT―and the result is a thoughtful, timely page-turner that explores the twisted corridors of authority from a street-level view, while never losing sight of the larger issues of truth and justice." ―Rob Hart, author of The Warehouse and the Ash McKenna series "Avery's first-person voice is strong and distinct, and his moral quandaries are real and immediate." ―Kirkus Reviews
