About the Book

Simple Arcadia for Beginners: Using Capella is for Beginners. This book is for beginning modelers who have just downloaded a copy of Capella and are anxious to get started, but otherwise don't know too much about Arcadia and don't have much experience using Capella or any other similar tool. The purpose of this book is to help the reader get through the initial learning curve and start the reader on the way to becoming proficient at Arcadia modeling. The book is designed to be a tool companion for two of the more comprehensive books on Arcadia: Systems Architecture Modeling with the Arcadia Method: A Practical Guide to Capella (Implementation of Model Based System Engineering), 1st Edition by Pascal Roques Model-based System and Architecture Engineering with the Arcadia Method, 1st Edition by Jean-Luc Voirin Together, these books provide in-depth coverage of Arcadia. However, these books show only finished diagrams. They don't cover the full sequence of steps needed to construct the models and the diagrams. The goal of Simple Arcadia for Beginners: Using Capella is to get you comfortable enough with Capella and the basics of Arcadia so that you can confidently construct common models. This book covers the basic Arcadia diagram types, showing detailed steps to construct simple models that demonstrate key concepts for each diagram type. If you work your way through all of the examples in this book, you should be on a strong footing to tackle more complex modeling problems when they come your way. Simple Arcadia for Beginners: Using Capella is a collaboration of two authors. For the Capella edition of the Simple for Beginners series, Pascal Roques provides in-depth knowledge of Arcadia and Capella. David Hetherington serves as the editor and adapts some of the material from the SysML books in the Series. Features Quick start with the tool Simple Arcadia modeling examples 40+ example model files 500+ annotated screen captures Solid foundation for further study Limitations Tool Version - The first edition of this book was authored using Capella version 6.1. Future versions of Capella may have significant changes to the user interface. Tool Manual - This is a beginner's introduction and is not a comprehensive reference for every feature of the tool. Screen Captures - Most readers appreciate our approach of providing annotated screen captures of the actual tool. However, there are physical technology issues that limit the level of sharpness we can achieve in this format. A small number of readers of previous books in this series have expressed frustration on this point.

About the Author :
Pascal has 30 years of experience in consulting and training about modeling with Arcadia/Capella, SysML, and UML. After his initial experience as a design engineer, Pascal Roques joined Verilog in Toulouse early 1986. He worked there as a consultant and trainer for almost ten years on modeling tools. In mid-1995, Pascal Roques opened a new office in Toulouse for the Valtech Agency. Working from the new office, he continued to do consulting and training in modeling. In 2001, he joined Valtech Training where he took over responsibility for the modeling offerings in Valtech's training catalog. In this role, he led more than 150 UML and SysML training sessions in France and abroad.Pascal Roques is now an independent consultant and trainer focusing on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). Since 2011, he has led more than 200 MBSE courses in France and abroad for more than 2000 engineers. Pascal Roques is the author of the first book ever published on Capella (ISTE - Elsevier) and regularly speaks at international conferences. David Hetherington is a leading Model-Based Systems Engineering(MBSE) consultant serving multiple defense and commercial industry sectors. He has extensive personal experience in designing and leading design teams for both software and hardware covering an unusually broad range of system types. These complex systems have varied from real-time control, to software internationalization, to offshore oil drillships, to enterprise software applications, to automotive radar chipsets, to electronic publishing, and more. In addition to MBSE, he has a strong concentration of domain knowledge in safety, reliability, maintainability, and diagnostics. He uses this broad domain knowledge in combination with his MBSE skills to assist clients at two levels: - Individual Skills - He teaches engineers across a wide variety of disciplines to sharpen their systems thinking and produce higher quality work products by using MBSE tools and techniques to clarify the requirements and objectives of their specialized designs.- Organizational Transformation - He supports executives faced with the challenge of bringing teams with legacy, siloed, "document-centric" development habits into the integrated digital engineering future. David is an active member of: - INCOSE - International Council on Systems Engineering- IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers- SAE - Society of Automotive Engineers- United States Naval Institute David speaks Japanese and German fluently as well as some Chinese and Spanish. He lives in Austin, Texas.
