About the Book

Resurrecting a horrifying and romantic narrative that broke fresh ground for its genre, this newly rereleased novel sets a vampire story in contemporary Los Angeles--the pleasure dome of late 1990s sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll culture. Unlike the vampires that came before her, Justine does not shun crosses, she watches horror movies on television, and she sets upon her prey in an almost apologetic way, never killing her victims but leaving them unconscious instead. She soon finds herself entwined in a very human sexual relationship with Keith, a down-on-his-luck rock guitarist whose hands have recently been mangled by a gang of drug dealers. Justine nurtures Keith out of his depression and drug addiction as he in turn becomes her lover and accomplice in her nocturnal predations. The relationship between the undead and the living is realistically and tragically portrayed as Keith acts both as Justine's enabler and unwitting nemesis and, in this classic role reversal, ends up having to destroy the one he loves in order to save her.

Review :
In Stainless, Todd Grimson set out to write the 'ultimate, final vampire novel'--and succeeded. . . . Stainless is a novel waiting to be rediscovered. --Damien Walter, www.Guardian.co.uk (October 27, 2011) Stainless is cutting edge. --www.FnordInc.com (January 2012) Stainless is sometimes just plain terrifying. But Grimson has also washed his players, human and vampire, in something tragic and romantic. The perfect patina for his brilliant and imaginative brand of Hollywood noir. --Eugene Register-Guard (February 5, 2012) An erotic confetti-shower that leaves you thrilled and unclean. --Kirkus Reviews If Raymond Chandler or Flannery O'Connor had written a vampire novel, it might read with the brutal and passionate clarity of Stainless. Layers of corruption are explored and peeled away from the core of a heart-crushing love story. The ultimate late night in L.A. --Katherine Dunn, author, Geek Love In many ways, Stainless could be called a post-modern vampire story, as Grimson tweaks our preconceptions with the literary equivalent of a knowing wink . . . But what sets [it] apart is not so much its narrative structure as its character details, its moments of intimacy between human and vampire. --David Ulin, Los Angeles Times Those in search of a more serious story of the occult will likely appreciate Grimson's somber and direct approach to the genre. --Publishers Weekly (March 12, 2012) With his writing teeth in the reader's neck and his tongue in his own cheek, Grimson plunders the bloody fantasy world of vampirism. --Lynne Tillman, author, American Genius: A Comedy
