Review :
Offering an interactive approach to weekly word study, this book/DVD package contains 15 short b&w mini-comics illustrating the meanings of words and word parts in context, paired with 20-minute activities, for students in grades 5 and up. Created by a teacher and a graphic designer, the package consists of three major elements: words sorts, 15 comics, and creative writing-based games and activities, plus optional extension activities. The games and activities reinforce material on roots, suffixes, and prefixes found in the stories. Extension activities encourage students to think about language, consider word formation, improve reading fluency, and create their own comics with example comic scripts and 20 comic layout templates on the DVD. The entire package is rooted in several theories and research bases regarding literacy and vocabulary acquisition, and an introduction reviews major concepts of these theories; there is also a list of recently published books on integrating comics into literacy instruction. The DVD contains an interactive software program for projectors, whiteboards, and student computers, supporting the lessons and allowing students to create their own comics. The DVD also includes PDF files of the comics, riddle cards, word sorts, and student notebook pages. Carter teaches English education at the University of Texas-El Paso. He has written two previous books on teaching with graphic novels and was awarded the Excellence in Graphic in Education Award in 2009. Evensen is a graphic designer, illustrator, and graphic novelist; he teaches design technology at Bemidji State University.-- "(c)2011 Book News Inc., Portland, OR"
