About the Book

A sweet and funny portrait of America's midwestern people. 27 stories delivered with real character and a strong leaning toward truth.

About the Author :
Larry Smith is a native of the industrial Ohio River Valley. He taught for three decades at Firelands College of Bowling Green State University in Huron, Ohio, where he directs Bottom Dog Press Inc and The Firelands Writing Center. In 2005 he co-edited with wife Ann, the Harmony Series anthology Family Matters: Poems of Our Families, and in 2004 he and poet Ray McNiece edited America Zen: A Gathering of Poets (both from Bottom Dog Press). His eighth book of poems is A River Remains (WordTech Editions 2006) following his memoirs: Milldust and Roses (Ridgeway Press, 2001). This is his third book of fiction. His writing has been read on Reader's Almanac of public radio, and he has received an NEH, a Fulbright, and an Ohio Individual Artist award.

Review :
Reminiscent of Spoon River Anthology, Larry Smiths writing gives clear voice to the unsung. From Lou, a jaded mechanic, and Assunta, a victim of butchered haircuts by evil-eyed Aunt Rose, to old friends sharing the quiet reality of cancer and the wonder of eagles in flight, this diverse collection of lives and fates makes the imperfect profound. - -Laura Treacy Bentley, poet in Family Matters The words of waitresses, store clerks, veterans, rock musicians, exchange students, cooks, hair dressers, cancer survivors, artists, gas station attendants, red caps, prostitutes, retirees, seniors. "In Larry Smiths Faces and Voices, the work of telling stories is the work of both healing wounds and shaping the world....After you read these stories, you will take a closer look at the waitress who refills your coffee, the man who cashes your check at the bank, the couple in the car that passes you on the secondary highway. What these monologues, letters and phone calls share is an urgency; with only the bare truth to guide them, Smiths characters struggle to make some sense in the world, and through telling their stories, they succeed." -Bonnie Jo Campbell, author of Q Road
