About the Book

With gentle good humor and uncommon wisdom, MAX HEEB shares his genesis as a surgeon in small-town Missouri. Told through a rich assortment of anecdotes culled from an acclaimed career, this book is filled with goodness and humanity. Max The Knife cuts straight to the heart Bob Morris, the author of numerous newspaper and magazine articles as well as recent novels BAHAMARAMA and JAMACAMEDEAD is a nominee for the Edgar Allen Poe Award Max Heeb will take you into the mind of the surgeon. His personal history, experiences and insight will both amuse and amaze the reader on what it is like to become a well respected experienced rural surgeon. You will truly know how it feels to be a surgeon thru his adventures. It is hard to believe that this is a true story-- but it is, I know. Michael J. Buckstein, MD.F.A.C.S. is C.E.O. of The Hannibal Clinic and President Of The Hannibal Cancer Center in Hannibal, Missouri. and a former governor of the American College of Surgeons for Missouri. MAX THE KNIFE is an absorbing, totally interesting account of the life and times of a country surgeon. Not only does the author, who is an accomplished and distinguished surgeon, take us into realistic life experiences during the depression/world war two years, but allows the reader to enter that intriguing circle of the medical profession... not common to most. All the great narratives... plus the intricate description of many uncommon surgical procedures and techniques make this book one most enjoyable read Dr. Samuel Harbin was superintendent of schools when Dr. Heeb was on the board of Education in Sikeston Missouri and currently superintendent of schools in Cairo, Illinois Bob Heyssel would have lovedMAX THE KNIFE. He was proud to call Max friend and mentor and would find the book true to form, witty and sincere. Bob was a Mo. U. medical school classmate and I have known Max for over 50 years. The book is a wonderful way to recapture those years. His description of sailing experiences is interesting as well as exciting extending all over the Caribbean, the Aegean Sea and The south Pacific. Maria Heyssel is the widow of Dr Robert Heyssel former C.E.O and President of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health Systems, retiring in 1992.
