About the Book

The third novel in the Jack Irish series won the 2000 Ned Kelly Award for Best Crime Novel, and has earned its place as a modern Australian crime classic. Jack Irish-lawyer, gambler and people-finder-is hunting down the villains who hijacked the winnings from his latest betting coup when he is hired by a mystery client to find missing barman Robbie Colburne. But Robbie turns up dead of a drug overdose. The case should be closed, but the dashing young barman was far from what he seemed, and the client wants to know more. As Jack explores the young man's past, he finds himself drawn into a deadly network of power, politics and money. In this world, nothing can be taken at face value and everything is expendable-including Jack.

About the Author :
Peter Temple is widely regarded as one of Australia's finest writers, and his novels have been published in twenty countries. During his lifetime he worked extensively as a journalist and editor, before teaching editing and media studies at a number of universities. His novels, among them the Jack Irish series, Truth, The Broken Shore and An Iron Rose, are celebrated as some of the best crime writing in English. Temple died in March 2018.

Review :
‘Temple writes…with enough insight and passion to make the reader ask exactly where the boundary lies between genre fiction and serious literary fiction.’ ‘Temple is as dark and mean, as cool and as mesmerising, as any James Ellroy or Elmore Leonard with whom you might kill the small or sad hours.' ‘Temple’s work is spare, deeply ironic; his wit, like the local beer, as cold as a dental anaesthetic.’ ‘Another world-class crime novel from Peter Temple.’ ‘It’s clever, funny, exciting and exceedingly well written. The author weaves multi layers of plot, life, characters and emotions into an exceedingly satisfying narrative that grips from first to last page. If you haven’t yet discovered Temple, track down his books. He’s premier class.’ ‘Temple’s ear for dialogue and the vernacular was quite something—and had him compared to the masterful Detroit-native Elmore Leonard.’
