About the Book

Rosie and Cray chuck in city jobs for Margaret River while Liza, Ferg and Sam have been there forever, working the family farm. Under pressure from developers, the families unite against change. But when a natural disaster strikes, change is inevitable. The south-west coast is the kind of place where people escape to. Unless you have lived there all your life, in which case, you long to get away. Rosie, a young journalist working for an ambulance-chasing editor, and Cray, a mineworker, chuck in their jobs for a sea change in Margaret River. Liza and Ferg along with their son Sam have been in Margies forever, working their youth away on a farm. The area is under pressure from developers, and the two families come together in the community's efforts to prevent unwanted change. But when a natural disaster strikes change is inevitable.

About the Author :
Deb Fitzpatrick is the author of young adult books 90 Packets of Instant Noodles and Have You Seen Ally Queen?, and The Amazing Spencer Gray for younger readers.

Review :
"The novel explores the experience of settling in and adapting to a rural lifestyle in contrast with the feeling of being trapped into living a parent's expectations rather than following one's own. Conflicts and doubts are often unspoken, and the boy's awareness of his parents' crumbling marriage is touching to read. The novel also dabbles with the well‐worn theme of development v. environment and the council that is insensitive to the wishes of the local community, and the fragility of the environment is mirrored in the fragility of the human relationships under scrutiny." --ANZ LitLovers LitBlog "There is some startlingly good, original and moving writing about landscape and place in this novel. It's a brave writer who takes on landscape writing, in an area so close to the region that Tim Winton has over decades made so unforgettably his own. But Fitzpatrick's best writing about the place and its ecology is almost mystical, with an attention to detail at once lyrical and microscopic." --Sydney Morning Herald "The story is set in the 1990s, a refreshing touch as technology does not take a front seat, and Fitzpatrick's love and knowledge of her home state is evident. Her prose is fluid and evocative and the use of excerpts from Robert Drewe's The Drowner works well. The chapters are short and their choppiness is much like the sea, which is almost another character in the novel. The Break will resonate with fans of Tim Winton, as Fitzpatrick writes about the natural environment with similar texture and intensity." --Books+Publishing
