About the Book

In an address by the Holocaust survivor and former President of the European Parliament, Veil speaks with exceptional force and eloquence of the fundamental importance of Europe.

Simone Veil had an extraordinary life and a lasting legacy. She survived Auschwitz as a teenager and was the first female President of the European Parliament. Remembered in France today for championing the Loi Veil, which decriminalised abortion, and advancing women’s rights as Health Minister, she is buried in state in the Panthéon.

In For Future Generations, Veil speaks to French university students on international cooperation, globalisation and the role that younger generations must play in ensuring that there will never be another Holocaust. Her words resonate even more strongly today than when they were first spoken. Her belief in Europe is a crucial part of her legacy and an important reason for reading this book.

'Essential reading' – Baptiste Liger, Lire

'Saying everything in a few words, this prophetic text is both intimate and political' – Jérôme Cordelier, Point

About the Author :
Simone Veil was born in Nice in 1927 into a non-practising Jewish family. In March 1944 she and her family were arrested by the Gestapo. Simone, her mother and her sisters were sent to Auschwitz, while her brother and father were deported to the Baltic states. Simone and her sister Denise were the only members of the family to survive. After graduating with a law degree, Veil first practised as a lawyer and a magistrate and worked in the Ministry of Justice, then served as Minister of Health from 1974 to 1979, when she was elected to the European Parliament. She became President of the parliament the same year and held the position until 1982. In 1993 she returned to the French government before being appointed to the Constitutional Council in 1998. In 2008, she was elected to the Académie Française. Veil died in 2017. Ruth Diver is a former academic who translates from French, German and Russian.
