About the Book

1845: . In Ireland the potato crop has failed ushering in a six-year period of famine and disease which will destroy a million lives and compel another million people to flee the country. A woman cursed by a priest stands alone on a clifftop trying to summon up the courage to jump. Her brother stands accused of murder and rebellion against the State. Surrounded by a troop of soldiers a landlord destroys the homes of his tenants leaving them to die on the hillsides. The British Government responds to the crisis, reshaping Irish society with disastrous results. Darkness Falling is a story of lives destroyed by the misuse and abuse of power, of betrayal and greed, and of survival and courage in the face of horror.

About the Author :
I'm married with two sons. The youngest is currently working as a doctor in Bristol and the oldest completed a degree in Mathematics before embarking on a PHD at Warwick University in Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology. I have a degree in English from Aberystwyth University and spent most of my career as a Company Secretary at the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). I now run my own consultancy working mainly in the not for profit sector. I currently live in Godmanchester near Cambridge.

Review :
This is a brilliant read. It's difficult to read about the horrors of the great famine but you get so caught up in the story and lives of the characters you can't put it down. I was sorry to finish it and hope there'll be a sequel. The second novel by an empathetic and intelligent author. "Darkness Falling" blends meticulous historical research with love, intrigue, courtroom drama, great hardship, and the battle for justice . It's a dark novel about a terrible and harsh time and is a gripping read with several twists and turns. It's impact has stayed with me for a long time.
