Review :
“There is a genuine warmth that brings these characters to life, and a precision in the plotting that feels like a well-written television series; nothing spare, everything stripped back to its most effective and affecting.” - Manchester Review of Books "The book is simmering with tension and a build-up of quiet menace." -** Kayleigh @bookwormescapes** "A must-read for fans of Paula Hawkins or M. T. Edvarsson... A gripping, pacy thriller." - Northern Soul Magazine "Kenyon’s book explores themes of faith, motherhood and marriage with nuance. At the same time, the plot propels the reader forward with the claustrophobic tension of recent grip-lit classics like The Girl on the Train." - Crime Culture Magazine 'Luring you in with promises of happily ever after, Kenyon quickly removes any feelings of comfort by putting Amber in direct conflict with everything and everyone around her. Isolated and without even her faith to call on, Amber is left to determine how much darkness is really within her.' - The Northern Bookworm 'This book is a tension-filled psychological thriller with a difference. It's set in a Mormon community and gives the reader an insight into the Mormon Church in the US while also building tension from start to finish.' - Jacqueline Ward, Author '* This is a compelling story of compulsion. The eponymous dark is not just within them, but around them: a murky carapace held close by the gravity of guilt*.' - Pete Hartley, Author and Playwright '*The Dark Within Them shows how a mother's desire to provide her family with a traditional lifestyle and a father figure, comes at a harrowing cost *.' - Maureen Stapleton, Love Reading *'This is a debut novel from Isabelle Kenyon and I recommend it heartily. Kenyon writes with masterful fluidity. Her prose reminds me of Donna Tartt; like Tartt she dwells on details, she grapples with deep feelings and dark secrets, and she relishes the poetry of her words and the rhythm of the prose. The pages turn easily, and as they do, the tension mounts. There is an interiority to the characters of Amber and Chad, and we spend time in the company of both as they come to terms with the novelty of their relationship, and the awful events that unfold around them. This is surely one of the most disturbing novels I have read for a very long time. Intense, but utterly compelling. Do give it a go. Five stars.'* John Ironmonger, Author of The Whale at the End of the World
