About the Author :
The world has changed more than we ever could have imagined since the global health crisis. We are concerned not only for our education but for the education of our children. Selena Watts appreciates that both the way we teach and the way we learn has to change. All three of her books are dedicated to those who are passionate about becoming better educators. When Selena moved to a different country, the only thing she could do was teach English. Even though she was a native, she felt like she needed some formal qualifications. As a mum to young children, she couldn't go to university, so she began learning online.Despite gaining qualifications in teaching and business management, she didn't feel that her learning included practical advice on how to teach. Each course told her the importance of lesson planning, but it was only her experience preparing classes that enabled her to become the teacher she is today.Selena Watts created a series of three books, Teaching Online, Teaching Yourself to Teach, and Creating Courses Online. Each one contains step by step guides using terminology that we are all familiar with. These three books are written with such passion for her students, that Selena Watts inspires her readers to become better. They take the qualities that teachers have and enhance them. She has spent years testing teaching strategies and now provides some of the best methodologies to engage students so that they love learning.
Review :
"I purchased this book (the first in the author's Teaching Today series) for my cousin who is a first-grade teacher in one of the poorer neighborhoods in Seattle. As she (my cousin) grapples with teaching first-graders via Zoom/remotely in a post-covid environment (saying things like "They get up to go to the bathroom and they just don't come back! I don't know what to do...), I thought I might be able to offer her some new thought or idea with this book, and so I bought it... Because teaching is tough, teaching first-graders is doubly tough, and teaching them via Zoom... I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.
Well, along comes this book, which is pretty timely. I started reading it just to make sure it was good and pretty soon, I was immersed. I love how the author breaks down all of the different types of learners before delving into how to target pupils by type. Because when I was in school, there were only three types... which never seemed exactly right. From there, the author does a masterful job of providing step-by-step instructions for those who seek--not to manage kids--but to lead and inspire them.
Having now read the entire book myself, I am hugely excited to give this to my cousin, and I recommend highly for any teacher who is feeling a little stifled by the current environment of teaching, or who just needs a little inspiration. The tone is educational, but the ideas are concrete and good, and the spirit of the book is uplifting. And who couldn't use a little lift right now." By Kris Villager, Amazon Customer
"What does it take to be more than a good teacher? Good is good but great is a whole lot better. This book; Teach Yourself to Teach is one that can turn you into a great teacher if you are a good or turn you into a good teacher if you are simply average. It gives you all the tools and steps that you need to be an effective teacher. From the psychology of the 7 or 8 types of learners to blended learning, knowing how to establish teacher authority and as well how best to deal with and motivate problematic students. I particularly liked the chapter on the different personalities of students. Smart way to be able to give each student the kind of attention he/she needs to grow." By Ejeks, Amazon Customer
"This book addresses what I have always considered the greatest deficiency of every college education department I've ever encountered. While strong on learning theory and on promoting the PhD thesis publications of university lifers, these departments fail to train aspiring teachers HOW to teach -- in the day to day practical sense.
"Teaching Yourself To Teach" is exactly what successful American educators have been forced to do for decades. This book is an immense aid to that process, laying out, in a systematic and practical way, the techniques, strategies, and array of best practices that lead to providing students with an actual education. The author's entire series ought to be the basis for a mandatory course in every university's education department in the country." By JCN, Amazon Customer
