About the Book

This is a true story of a young boy growing up in a North Midland town, later a city and of 2 ladies who would have a profound effect on his life. All 3 were born, either in the middle or at the end of the 2 greatest wars of the 20th century and into a society that was to see the enormous changes over the last 100 years. It is a love story, a penitence and one which I hope will let the reader know that with a little bit of luck and hard work, the art of the impossible is possible.

About the Author :
I was born in 1945 in Derby, at 52 Belgrave Street. I moved to Allestree via Chaddesden in 1953 and then onto Allenton in 1961. I was educated at Reginald Street Infant School, Morley Road Chaddesden, Allestree Junior School and Allestree Woodlands. I was employed by Rolls-Royce from 1960 to 1971 and I spent a short time with BTR Industries, after which I joined British Rail in 1972. In 1991, I was working for the British Railways Board DM&EE as the Shopping Controller, Wagon and Coaching Stock for the Civil Engineers. On privatisation of British Rail in 1992, I transferred to The Engineering Link as Senior Commercial Engineer. In 1998, under a rationalisation scheme, I was made redundant and a year later, after two temporary jobs, set up GRW Consultancy Co Ltd – working on computerised operational maintenance and registration in the private hire wagon industry until 2006 before retiring at the age of sixty-one. A lover of all amateur sports, I served for four years in the 5th/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (TAVR) as a signaller, and in the late nineteen-seventies as timekeeper and paddock steward at the greyhound stadium in Derby. I married Rosemary Wendy Andrea Mann on June 7th, 1970 and was blessed with three children: Joanne, David and Vicky. I lost Rosemary to cancer on April 26th, 2002 just over two years after my mother Ruby; Father would follow in 2007. I now live a quiet life in Chellaston (Celerdestune in the Doomsday Book) – which was a small village on the outskirts of Derby in 1975 when we moved there, now part of the suburban area of Derby and within walking distance of two German superstores.
