Review :
Rhodri hates Wednesdays. Before his father left home for good, Wednesdays were something special - now they are taken up by tests and his so far unsuccessful efforts to see his name on the football team sheet at school. But all this changes when Rhodri meets Idris, one of King Arthur's legendary court on his own quest - Idris wants nothing more than to achieve his full knight status and gain a seat at Arthur's Round Table. Together, Idris, Rhodri, and Rhodri's dog, Dylan, learn that their own talents will help them find their place in the world. A puzzle of a book, as there are more questions than answers in this intriguing primary read by broadcaster and former teacher Roy Noble. The coloured pen and ink drawings by Karl Davies are full of expression, mood and quirky humour. These are stories in themselves as well as enjoyable illustrations. Superb. Why did Rhodri's father leave home for good? How will he fill his Wednesdays without him? Will the companionship of Dylan the inadequate sheep dog help? Will he ever be as good as his schoolmates at spelling and 'mental maths'? Will he ever be chosen for the football team,be in the 'A' Band? Rhodri's list of failures is disheartening but the author's easy style of storytelling and occasional touches of humour make him a sympathetic character rather than a gloomy one. Young readers will respond with empathy to one who needs encouragement and practical support and will likely get their problem-solving thinking caps on. It is a Wednesday visit to Dinas Rock with its legendary hidden cave that brightens the mood with a magical clash of past and present. As the companions enjoy the open air and delightfully described natural surroundings, Rhodri recalls a school trip and his teacher Mr Morgan's stories of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and in the blink of an eye they are joined by another disappointed individual, Idris in medieval attire, who has always wanted to be a knight but is always passed over. Will teamwork and drawing on one another's strengths and talents enable the three to achieve their goals? Readers will enjoy making up their own stories and outcomes whilst waiting for Roy Noble's sequel.
