About the Book

A cure was supposed to end the pain. Nobody asked what it might begin.

When researchers develop a radical new treatment for fibromyalgia, the results appear extraordinary. Patients who have spent years living with relentless pain begin to recover. Lives once defined by exhaustion and limitation open again.

But scientist Dr Eleanor "Nell" Mercer has been asking a question nobody wants to hear: what if the treatment has changed more than the disease?

As unexpected genetic alterations begin to emerge, the medical breakthrough becomes something far more dangerous-and far more complicated. The changes may not end with those who received the treatment. They may be inherited.

Suddenly, a medical question becomes a national one.

Scientists argue over evolution and genetics. Politicians struggle with an impossible responsibility. The military is asked to prepare for consequences nobody fully understands. And ordinary people who believed they had been cured find themselves classified, monitored and increasingly separated from the society they thought they belonged to.

They become known simply as the Changed.

As fear spreads, Britain must confront questions for which neither science nor law has an easy answer. If someone's DNA has been permanently altered, are they any less human? If those alterations can pass to their children, does society have the right to intervene? And how far can a government go in protecting future generations before protection becomes persecution?

For Nell, those questions are no longer theoretical. Speaking out could cost her career, her influence and her place at the table-but remaining silent could help legitimise something she cannot defend.

Meanwhile, one family refuses to become an experiment, a statistic or a problem to be contained. They disappear from the system and build a hidden life far from the arguments taking place in laboratories and government offices.

But humanity has already crossed a line it cannot simply step back over.

HUMAN? is a thought-provoking speculative thriller about medical ambition, genetics, evolution, prejudice and the dangerous distance between what science can do and what humanity should do.

There are no easy villains.

There may be no right side.

And when the future of the human species itself is at stake, the most frightening question may not be what we are becoming-

but what we are prepared to do to one another along the way.
