About the Book

Some people buy immortality. Some people have to die for it.

Detective Mark Mathews has a problem: people are disappearing.

There are no bodies. No ransom demands. No obvious connection between the missing. Just a growing stack of cases that refuse to make sense.

Then the trail leads to Elysian Systems.

Behind its immaculate public image, Elysian is developing something extraordinary: the Continuity Engine, a technology promising the wealthy and dying what humanity has wanted since the beginning of time-a way to escape death.

But consciousness cannot simply be transferred into an empty body.

For the process to work, the brain must already contain living, established neural pathways.

It needs a Host.

And the Host doesn't always volunteer.

Working alongside Mark is Nox, his police-issued cybernetic cat. Designed to access police systems, analyse evidence and record investigations for prosecution, Nox should be the perfect obedient machine.

He isn't.

Years earlier, Mark connected Nox to his home computer while attempting to access classified files. Something changed. Since then, Nox has developed peculiar habits, an inconvenient sense of humour and an increasingly questionable interpretation of the difference between following orders and doing what he believes is right.

As Mark follows the missing into Elysian's hidden programme, the investigation becomes personal. His own brother, David, disappeared three years earlier.

What Mark discovers forces him to confront a possibility worse than murder.

The people Elysian places inside its Hosts may genuinely believe they are the dead people they were created to replace.

And the original consciousness may still be there too.

With money, political influence and desperate people willing to pay almost any price for another lifetime, Elysian isn't trying to hide forever.

It intends to win.

Soon Mark is no longer investigating simply who has disappeared or what happened to his brother. He is confronting questions for which neither science nor the law has an answer.

If every memory can be copied, every behaviour reproduced and every emotional response reconstructed, what makes someone the original?

If two minds inhabit the same brain, which one owns the body?

And if a perfect reconstruction wakes believing absolutely that it is you...

who has the right to tell it that it isn't?

Because buried beneath Elysian's Continuity programme is another experiment-one that began long before Mark ever heard the company's name.

And when Nox finally reveals what he has been hiding, Mark's investigation will turn back on the one identity he never thought to question.

His own.

The Continuity Engine is a dark speculative crime thriller about consciousness, identity, mortality and the terrifying price of refusing to die. Combining police investigation, conspiracy, near-future technology, dark humour and a cybernetic cat with secrets of his own, it asks one final question:

If you cannot prove that you are the original, does it matter?

Dark, clever and disturbingly plausible. The Continuity Engine asks what makes us human-and refuses to give an easy answer. - Arthur Allan
