About the Book

A pencil written diary of 1894, not discovered until October 2013, forms the first part of A Tale of Two Teds. Consisting of daily entries by a 16 year old apprentice joiner, it sheds a fresh light on how the Welsh built so many of the streets and roads of Victorian and Edwardian Liverpool. It becomes clear, as we read Ted Jones diary, that at 16 and 17 he was an unusual fellow and it comes as no great surprise that he rose to become president of a Building Society. Writing his diary each night, he reveals his character, meticulously listing his wages and how he banked them, writing a testimonial for a leaving fellow worker on behalf of their joint employer, of buying and selling pistols for his uncle, of attending joinery and maths lectures, of boxing and swimming and in addition to his chapel going, attending organ recitals,. His list of activities is endless, an inspiration to young men and women of today. The author was to find that his own life had followed in his grandfather Ted Jones' footsteps in so many ways, both Teds entering Liverpool's building industry by chance. Ted Evans formed his own architectural practice in 1970 and was active in the refurbishment of Victorian properties in that decade. Just as his forebears had built that explosion of terraced streets of Liverpool at the end of the 19th century, so was he caught up in the Government inspired scheme to rectify the singular omission of inside toilets and damp proof courses. Windsor View, where in the rear yards Ted Evans' practice designed and supervised the building of kitchen and bathroom extensions, was the terrace of houses on which Ted Jones learnt his trade of joiner. Those houses were the starting pistol for the hundreds of houses which he went on to build and of the many hundreds which Ted Evans went on to refurbish. This book will be of interest and value to those who love the City of Liverpool and they will relish the insight into how the people of North Wales came to Liverpool to join its Chapels and to play such a significant part in the creation of the City we know today.
