D-Day: The Last of the Liberators: Some of the Last Veterans of the Normandy Landings Retrace Their Steps Seventy Years Later

About the Author :
Robin Savage is a London-based professional freelance photographer. Originally from Berkshire, he developed a keen interest in photography from an early age, encouraged and supported by his father. Now 36 and a successful theatre photographer, Robin's work has been seen in both national newspapers and magazines published throughout the UK. He focuses on producing actors' portraits and production photographs for West End and regional theatre companies. Robin's love of photography is matched by a long-held and particular fascination with the First and Second World Wars, especially the Normandy landings of 1944. It is an interest that has grown in intensity and been fed by his many conversations with veterans of those events, who fought so hard for the freedom of Europe 70 years ago and who left an indelible mark on him. Now visits to those beaches and battlefields of Normandy are an annual pilgrimage for Robin, each June 6th, enabling him to commemorate those who were lost and to spend time with the veterans who are still here today. His respect for their achievements and their continuing dignity led to a desire to turn his art of photographic portraiture into a permanent record of the men and women who endured the horrors of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. Robin lives in North London with his wife, Sophie, though travelling often to visit many of the veterans who have become friends through the years.

Review :
"I have no reservations about being a cheerleader for this book. It has had an effect way beyond my expectations and I hope it does really well. It isn’t often I find myself so affected by a book. I salute the author. He was making something deeply personal and yet he shared it with all of us.  I hope and trust it has the same impact on you." “ … superb photographic record …” Beautifully photographed color portraits of World War II British veterans posed in the Normandy landscape they helped liberate from German occupation make this 96-page, large-format book extremely poignant... In a rather unique and touching way, the uthor/photographer records stories of individuals’ emotional but dignified returns to the locations, in many cases the precise spots, tied to their most profound personal memories of the campaign. They are places where they saw combat or got wounded, where some experienced examples of miraculous chance, or where they witnessed chums’ last moments on earth....All too soon the duty of remembering them and their already fallen comrades will belong to their descendants and the rest of the general population of their nation. Britain should remain eternally grateful for how a remarkable generation answered the call to duty, made tremendous sacrifices and played a vital part in winning the war in Europe 70 years ago. "
