About the Book

When Sandra Michie considers her life, the presence of a gracious heavenly Father lovingly planning all is overwhelming. Every joy and every trial has been perfectly sewn together into a beautiful patchwork of grace. But it has not always seemed this way. Working as a nurse for 25 years in rural Zambia, 500 miles from the nearest town, Sandra’s faith was tested to the limits. What was God’s purpose in the isolation, communication difficulties and disparate challenges? And returning to the UK, what was He doing through spells of joblessness and life-threatening ill-health? Sandra’s story is one of growth, change and joy that will encourage you to know God’s love in the lowest times and delight in His provision in the best. As you read it, allow Him to show you the tender thread of His goodness running through the patchwork of your life as it has done hers.

About the Author :
Sandra Michie worked as a missionary nurse in rural Zambia for 25 years. On returning to England, the place of her birth, she was involved as a Pastoral Worker in her local church. Now officially retired, life seems as busy as ever!

Review :
I found Sandra’s book a fascinating read. She begins by sharing with her readers her early life which was both difficult and disruptive as she survives World War 2, illness and subsequent emigration to South Africa with many moves of both home and school. A turning point came when she began a faith journey with Jesus in her teens and had friends who helped her develop a healthy spiritual life. With one of these friends she came back to England to train as a nurse and attend Bible College, before returning to South Africa to further train as a midwife. Her clear call to work as a missionary nurse in rural north west Zambia in days before mobile phones and the internet shows such resilience as she faces difficult situations and dangerous journeys almost daily. As a former missionary nurse in rural Congo in the same era, she made my life seem easy! It was breath-taking to read about some of her hair-raising journeys. All through the book we are given an honest insight into her on-going discipleship journey. Too often missionaries feel they have been put on a pedestal, yet they face the same everyday temptations as anyone anywhere else in the world. Sandra is honest about her struggles, conflict in relationships and in the second half of the book, describes the how difficult it was to re-enter British culture, retrain, find work, cope with serious illness, deal honestly with issues emerging from her past and find peace through forgiving those who had damaged her. Interwoven with the story line, Sandra quietly teaches us more about our loving heavenly Father who will never leave us or forsake us and who provides for our needs as we trust in Him. I found this book very encouraging and helpful. Even the appendix about coping with different cultural values clear and valuable for living in our complex multi-cultural society. Thank you, Sandra, for a great book. Mary Millard Weeks
