About the Book

This is a true story; a factual and historical account of the lives of the countless thousands of people who came to London in the early 1980's to begin new lives in Britain's capital city. 'Dirty Squatters' is a dark, often desperate, comical, true story of underground life in Thatcher's Britain. A tale of hope against the odds, and a journey into the lives being lived unseen by those who were too busy making 'loadsamoney' and dreaming only of 'me, me, me' during that era. A story of all those musicians, painters, sculptors, artists, authors, designers, filmmakers and people from all backgrounds who descended upon London to escape the misery of suburbia or the hopelessness of their jobless situations in the new, Tory made, industrial wastelands of northern Britain. These are the stories of those who survived the Thatcher years, and as a result are probably seen as 'The last political generation' in Britain. We were the disillusioned majority who were promised the earth (along with a share of 'sell-off Britain') but more often ended up cast aside and homeless in the big city and living by our wits. This story is a real-life account of squatter fortunes and misfortunes, a gritty and graphical tale spanning 17 exciting 'homeless years'. This tale includes many factual references relating to the news of the day, the politics, the subculture, the drug culture, the music, the clubbing scene, the fashion, the attitudes and the television shows of those days. Tales of the unified hated and the counterculture movement against Thatcherism as defined by 'The Iron Lady' are aired and remembered in these pages. This is 'the other' untold story of Thatcher's Britain, written in a narrative style, a unique story and a slice of the lives of those 'Dirty, filthy, Squatters'. People who by no choice of their own chose to occupy the multitude of empty (and therefore wasted) council properties spread liberally throughout inner London during the nineteen eighties and nineties. There are also references to travels in Holland, Germany and Crete, highlighting similar incidents and accounts of the squat life in those countries during that era. About the Author: Phill Gee was born in Essex, England sometime in the sixties, an ex punk rock drummer now working in film production. He squatted in various parts of London, mostly in the Brixton area for a decade and a half. He strongly recommends that the reader should not browse some chapters while consuming food.
