About the Book

IT is 1988. The paths of three very different men have independently converged upon Burma: a blue-eyed old Buddhist hermit named U Wizaya; his friend Patrick, an Irish Catholic priest; and a US marine, a Vietnam veteran named Charles. U Wizaya had started life as Simeon, son of an Indian Army offi cer who inveigled the young man into the army. Patrick was pushed as a boy into the Church by his father, an illiterate farmer, and became an ineffective missionary. Charles ('Chuck') was the son of a US Marine veteran of WW2. He willingly followed in his father's footsteps and was drafted to Vietnam. By the time all three have converged in Burma the action has spanned most of the twentieth century and the scenes have ranged from Colorado to Vietnam, from England to India and from Ireland to Burma. All three men have been troubled by the violence they have experienced and by lack of certainty in their religious beliefs, and all are independently seeking peace of mind. A massacre takes place in Sagaing, and although on his deathbed U Wizaya has managed to save some lives by sending Patrick with a warning: Patrick and Chuck witness the bloodshed and are temporarily caught up in the violence. Like U Wizaya, whom he never met, Chuck decides to retreat into a Buddhist way of life. Patrick, who has rapidly been losing his faith, is expelled by the Burmese military junta and ends up espousing Buddhism. Chuck enters a monastery but, after having been a Buddhist monk for some time, decides that non-violence is of no use inside a murderous regime. He reverts to a military role, joining the Burmese resistance fi ghters. In this fact-based story, there are two themes. One is the question: when is it justifi able to disobey the injunction (common to Buddhism and Christianity)"Thou shalt not kill"? The other is the question "Is death really the end of the line?" -
