About the Book

. Boomtown is the about the life of a city which lives under the shadow of a volcano, and the tensions and trauma that thereby affect its citizens. Half of Boomtown lives in a state of readiness, half of it lives in a state of recklessness, but when the sirens start to wail one Christmas Eve, it becomes clear that its the reckless ones that have been in charge all this time, and the city's preparations for a natural disaster leave the population doomed. Satirical, witty, immensely clever, allegorical and absolutely gripping, in Boomtown Nick Walker has created a world that is defined by the constant threat of impending natural disaster and has populated it with a surreal community hell-bent on outwitting the most powerful force in the world. In an age when the frequency of major natural disasters is increasing, Nick Walker's novel is a satirical allegory that warns us not only about the immense power of nature, but also the danger inherent in politics, policy and bureaucracy that shroud rational thinking.

Review :
Praise for Nick Walkers previous books Blackbox and Helloland: "One of the year's outstanding debuts." - Time Out "Nick Walker's Blackbox is the best first novel I've read for a while: original, intelligent, compelling and written in perfect bite-sized chunks." - Patrick Neate, Guardian "Brilliantly developed and darkly comic." - Independent "Admirable and moving." - Observer "An intense conceptual comic thriller, it's very skilfully done. Funny, black as soot and totally fascinating." - Big Issue "The dialogue is crisp, strange and compelling." - Sunday Herald
