About the Book

MY OWN LIFE OF ADVENTURE Willard Price decided to become an explorer in 1901, at the tender age of four. He travelled to 148 countries and visited some extraordinary places over his lifetime. His fascinating experiences inspired him to write The Adventure Series, fourteen children's books about the exploits of two boys in search of wild animals all over the world. Price was far from a luxury traveller and found himself penniless and hungry on more than one occasion. He travelled by camel, canoe, elephant, bicycle and a strange variety of ships. He lived in Japan for five years, became a US spy and was sent by various periodicals to explore territory barely chartered by the Western world. Price's wife, Mary, didn't shy away from adventure and accompanied Willard on most of his expeditions. Mary slept in a fish bin aboard a Japanese junk (ship), stood up to pirates, calmly reversed a jeep from a charging elephant and was lashed to a ship's mast during typhoon 'Ruth'. Endlessly curious about the ways of other peoples, particularly remote societies, Price met a huge and intriguing variety of people along the way. The Jivaro Indians and their shrunken heads, the donkey thieving Pasha of Morocco, the incredible Albert Schweitzer in Africa who performed surgery for the price of a chicken, and the black-toothed Yap inhabitants whose money was up to twelve feet tall...to name but a few. Willard Price wrote his delightful account of the highlights of his life at the age of 95; his life of adventure evidently gave him an enviable vitality.
