About the Book

The first handbook in The Nautical Institute's maritime security suite complements the author's 2012 book Maritime Security: a practical guide. It takes the same practical approach to preparation and training before entering a high risk area, self-protection measures while within it and survival strategies if taken hostage.

The focus of the handbook is the people who have to cope with piracy and the comprehensive approach that is needed to put them first both onboard and ashore. This includes guidance on the effective implementation of the industry's Best Management Practices, the onboard implications of taking on armed guards, building a disciplined and supportive onboard team and ensuring immediate action ashore should the worst happen.

Table of Contents:
Introduction
Chapter 1 Introduction to piracy
Chapter 2 Types of piracy
Chapter 3 Practical measures to tackle piracy
Chapter 4 Tools to tackle piracy
Chapter 5 Planning and practicalities
Chapter 6 Hostages
Chapter 7 Tackling piracy
Chapter 8 The human element

About the Author :
Steven Jones MSc BSc (Hons) MNI

Steven Jones MSc BSc (Hons) MNI is Maritime Director of SAMI, the Security Association for the Maritime Industry. He spent a decade working as a navigation officer in the merchant navy and was attacked by pirates while serving. After moving ashore he advised numerous shipping companies on security planning – spending years researching, applying and developing an in-depth knowledge of security and the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. This knowledge has provided the basis for this publication and the main book
in the maritime security suite, Maritime Security: a practical guide (published by The Nautical Institute in 2012), and other handbooks in this suite. He has also contributed articles to The Nautical Institute’s magazine Seaways and other publications. His primary focus is on the human element – particularly the ways and means of bringing security techniques and effective management to the attention of crews of merchant vessels, office personnel and ship operators. He has experience across the maritime industry, working for shipping companies, insurers, publishers and professional bodies. As well as SAMI he is the founder of the International Dynamic Positioning Operators Association (IDPOA). He is a Member of The Nautical Institute, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Review :

From a serving Master...  "Excellent work. It is very well written, the layout and design are sharp, and the information is relevant and up to date. It came at a timely point for me as we are planning a trip through the Gulf of Aden. The requirements for the Citadel in particular were a revelation and I'll be quoting info to the office when we begin preparing the security plan for the voyage."

Review in International Tug & OSV May/June 2014: “With the author’s experience of maritime security issues and his emphasis on concise, often bullet-pointed advice, this handbook will be an invaluable tool for busy masters and crew. Packed with up-to-date summaries of recent regulation and official best practice guidance, this handbook fills a need and will be appreciated across the maritime industry.”

Review from the September 2014 issue of Baird Publications’ Work Boat World: "The author has had personal experience with pirates and, as a former navigation officer in the Merchant Navy, is now Maritime Director of SAMI (Security Association for the Maritime Industry). He knows his subject. The book, in the usual practical Nautical Institute style, is a simple, clear and sensible ‘how-to-do-it’primer for professional mariners."
