About the Book

'Penny Thoughts' originated from an exchange of e-mails between the author and his elder brother who left the Catholic Church and was determined to illustrate that what the Catholic Church teaches is apparently not what is taught in the Scriptures. The author merely tried to point out to him that he does not have the authority to make such a sweeping statement. The orientation of most of the articles in this book differs from most books on apologetics, in that the articles focus on the implications of a shift in one's vantage point. The shift is from a private interpretation of a passage of the Scriptures, to an interpretation guided by Catholic Tradition. The focus is on the role of Tradition, which directs or guides the process of interpretation. The advice that the Catholic Church offers is that one should check one's interpretation against the teachings of the Church community. Anyone who promotes the idea of a private interpretation will dislike the idea of checking one's interpretation against the teachings of the Church. Patrick Quinton Gonsalves has attempted to arrange this series of articles in such a way that a prominent theme will connect together with a number of articles into a cluster. What served as a catalyst for his turning to writing in earnest was the criticism directed at the teachings of the Catholic Church.
