About the Book

'The Nature of Things' is a fascinating synthesis of how the complex web of life which makes up our environment, also provides the inspiration for our technological innovation. The author dips into the history of science and technology, examining human innovation from the point of view of adaptation in nature. From the history and production of silk to such varied topics as flight, camouflage, animals that use 'tools', light, smell and migration; 'The Nature of Things' provides an accessible and easy-to-understand book which will be a valuable resource for school students and those interested in the natural world. Drawing on numerous examples gleaned from the natural world such as how man has emulated nature's use of threads in the production of fibres, 'The Nature of Things' provides the reader with a fascinating glimpse into how the complex web of life which makes up our environment has influenced and continues to influence human innovation. 'The Nature of Things' is Charles Gidman's enduring legacy to his love of the natural world and fascination for its impact on human inventiveness.

About the Author :
Charles Gidman was born in 1912 in Romiley, Cheshire. From an early age he took a keen interest in natural history and would explore the rural environment of Cheshire, collecting and observing plants and animals. As a young man he found work as a chemist working with dyestuffs to produce colours on various types of rayon. He volunteered for active service in 1940 and joined the RAF in Coastal Command. This took him to various countries, including Iceland, where he had the opportunity to study flora and fauna. After the War he changed careers and became a teacher - a job he always wanted to do. He spent most of his teaching career in Accrington and district schools where he became a well-known and respected member of the community. Charles was a member of several societies including the local Antiquarian and Naturalists' Society (as a life member) and Butterly Conservation (a subject upon which he was particularly knowledgeable). He contributed numerous articles and papers on natural history one of which, 'The Biography of a Cave in NW Yorkshire', attracted responses from universities across Europe after being published in 'Speleology Magazine'.
