About the Book

A classic work on Scotch and its origins, Lockhart's book has long been regarded as a whisky classic. Including the foreword written by his late son in 1995, fully updated and revised, this book covers some of the lesser known episodes in the industry's history. In particular the author's family's involvement with Balmenach Distilery on Speyside is well covered as are the polemics of the Scots and their relationship with whisky and where it might be heading. Much of what Lockhart stated back in the 60s still holds true 50 years later and the book is considered essential reading for the whisky enthusiast.

About the Author :
Robert Bruce Lockhart (1887-1970) had an extraordinarily varied life and is widely believed to be the inspiration for James Bond. Primarily a diplomat, he held posts in the Foreign Office serving in Russia during WW1 where he was accused of plotting to assassinate Lenin and imprisoned in the Kremlin until exchanged for Litvinov. He then served in Czechoslovakia and worked in the late 20s for Beaverbrook Newspapers until he took up writing full time. He returned to the FO in WW2 were he was Director-General of Political Warfare. He returned successfully to writing after the war and had a prolific output until he died in 1970.

Review :
A most interesting book on the ambrosia, staple sine qua non of hospitality. New York Times Brilliant. Clearly a labour of love. The Daily Telegraph A very readable book written with that tenderness which springs from nostalgic familiarity while giving so much interesting information. A very human book; also a humorous one. The Sunday Times
