About the Book

Born in Bradford Father Brendan Sullivan was educated by the Benedictines monks of Douai School, and at seventeen joined the Missionary Society of Mill Hill in 1940. For five years he taught in Lochwinnoch in Scotland before being sent to India, his mission was at Nellore in South India. Eight years in India were followed by six years in the Mid West of the USA. Fr. Brendan was assigned to Kenosha in the Mid West of the USA, his job there took him to California, New Orleans and among other places New York. After six years there, he was elected as the Financial Director of the Society and spent twelve years at Mill Hill in London. This task gave him the opportunity of visiting the Society's missions in India, the Far East, Africa and South America. After Mill Hill he was sent to Freshfield to help young people find their niche in life. A surprise call from the Falkland Islands in nineteen eighty nine invited him to take charge of the parish in the South Atlantic which looked after the people of Ascension Island, St. Helena Island and Tristan da Cunha. His Superior there lived in the Falklands so he had to pay the occasional visit there. This assignment meant many days spent in travelling on the remaining Royal Mail ship, the RMS St. Helena, the only way of visiting the South Atlantic Islands. By 1996 Fr. Brendan retired to the Mill Hill retirement home in Freshfield near Liverpool, where he now helps out in weekend work in places as remote as Barra, Bonnyrigg, Largs, Briggs in Lincoln, and the odd chaplaincy on a cruise ship. For three years Fr. Brendan went for a three month supply to an English speaking parish in the Costa del Sol. Now he takes turn with Mass in Birkdale and St. Joseph's hospital in Formby.
