About the Book

An introduction for new or developing collectors of sea shells, 'Shell Collecting Made Simple' explains where to find the best examples, how to treat live examples, and how to clean and record specimens.

About the Author :
Born in Essex in 1944, I learned to talk, on beaches still littered with the debris of war, at Walton-on the-Naze. We collected and ate just about any Gastropod except limpets but I did not take collecting seriously at the time. My real interest was sparked by the gift of a batch of beached shells from Sharjah. Key events were the finding of an Epitonium, a visit to Herm Island and a close look at a rock at Lloret del Mar.I discovered the Conchological Society and the British Shell Collectors club in the mid 1970's. I am a past secretary and President of the BSCC, a past President of the National Capital Shell Club, Washington D.C. and had a close association with the Smithsonian Institute while in the USA. I am the author of a number of articles, papers and a couple of books, translated into five languages. I have extensive collecting experience in the UK and from Norway to Aqaba. In the Atlantic I have collected from the Canaries, Portuguese West Africa, the Gambia and from Maine to Belize on the other side of the water. I was privileged to liase with many of the authorities of the day such as Harold Rehder, Joe Rosewater, Fritz Nordseick, Tom Pain, all now sadly deceased and with many others still living. I was also granted access to the specialist non-public libraries and collections at the Smithsonian Institute, the National Museum of Wales and the BMNH with their type material. Kathy Way deserves a special mention. I have a reference collection of Atlantic and Mediterranean material plus a lot of other items I cannot bring myself to part with!
