About the Book

From the early hours of 13 August 1961, when the East German government began to tear up streets, erect roadblocks and string up barbed wire, through the next 28 years, the Wall dominated the city and the lives of people around it. Using original documents from The National Archives and newly released Foreign Office records, this compelling book explores the true stories of spies, deserters and defectors from both sides of the Wall, as well as those who manned the checkpoints and repaired the breaches for whom the hated symbol was simply part of everyday life. Alongside eyewitness accounts of life on the ground, the book portrays individuals at the forefront of the propoganda, espionage and counter-espionage wars that grew up at the frontier. The desperate attempts of ordinary East Germans to escape to the West rub shoulders with "The Boys Own" exploits of BRIXMIS intelligence officers in a book that celebrates the bizarre and shows the brutality of this extraordinary time.

Table of Contents:
Introduction; 1. Building the Wall - Berlin Partioned; 2. Jumping the Wall - Defectors and Escapees; 3. Undermining the Wall - the propoganda offensive; 4. The Secret Wall - espionage and intelligence; 5. Defending - military planning; 6. Dismantling the Wall - Berlin reunited; Afterword - towards a new Berlin.
