About the Book

Hiya, I'm Dai Dando. From up the Coeca estate in Ponty. Working down year in Cardiff at the Gwalia. We do sell mortgages, see. They do call me Dave in work ...It's a kinda diary for twelve days late last summer. We do all tell stories, don we? Well, this is my story. It's Dai Dando's story. Yeah, Dai Dando.

Review :
Dai Dando is a very ordinary hero -- not quite everyman, perhaps, but still very recognisable and likeably so. Born and brought up in Pontypridd, he left school with five GCSEs. Now twenty-five, he is living in a bedsit in Cardiff and working as a junior accounts officer for the Gwalia Building Society. At weekends, he goes out on the pull. On Sunday evening, he irons five shirts ready for the coming week. He likes bums and boobs but is not averse to a bit of brain. He sometimes appears rather brash, but hes a pretty good bloke really. His stated belief is that life is a series of isolated incidents and he tends to take things in his stride. However, when the isolated incidents begin to stack up with alarming speed and complexity over a period of just twelve days, Dai Dandos world begins to wobble. Making full use of language and form, Meic Stephens tells Dais story partly through a third-person narrative in standard English and partly through internal monologue and dialogue using a rich and effective blend of English, Wenglish and Welsh. This is, in fact, not just Dais story, it is also about Wales and what it means to be Welsh. There are moments when Dais internal dialogues and conversations with other characters begin to smack of political and social discourse, but this is a minor irritation in a novel that offers a profound and moving exploration of the ambiguities and ambivalence surrounding identity and truth, whether personal, cultural or universal. As the narrative pace increases and events become ever more bizarre and hallucinatory, it becomes apparent that the identities and truths we cling to as absolutes are nothing more than our own illusory constructs.
