About the Book

'Patterns of Power' is not merely a collection of various history books nor an attempt to re-appraise pages of history. It offers new and valuable material, making a great contribution to our understanding of a true heroic age in England's heritage. Beginning with an introduction to the Vikings, this work describes the way in which many kingdoms fell to their savage attacks, 'all that is except one, WESSEX'. In this small kingdom arose the Warrior King, later named 'Alfred the Great'. When he succeeded to the throne, he reorganised Wessex and created a fighting force quite incomparable to any other in military history. Through his spies and the information they gathered, Alfred always knew where the Vikings would be and therefore always had control of their movements. He was able to deceive and trick them, only going into battle when the victory was certain. He allowed his enemies to become overly confident and gave them a false sense of security, feeding the weaknesses that led to their downfall. The Vikings' over confidence meant that they neglected basic military precautions and gave Alfred a great advantage over them. The maps and lists of points in the work make it easy to read and understand. The actions and tactics of the Warriors are knowledgeably explained and described. This book describes a Kingdom sparsely populated and with little political influence. However it also portrays a people with a love of God, a love of their country and a love of freedom, who, led by their King, forever changed the course of English history. Anyone with an interest in the history of England or military tactics will find this a gripping and thrilling read.

About the Author :
'Life begins at 70.' Fred Fry is a firm believer of this fact. Since passing seven decades of life, he has taken on many new and exciting challenges. Sailing and horse riding coupled with his continued passion for flying to name but a few. He is also a master of Tae Kwon Do, practising since 1967 at the university gymnasium in Oxford. Since serving in the army, Fry has become a member of the English Place Name Society and a Scholastic Researcher in documents of great antiquity. It was this serendipitous research rather than individual intellect that has resulted in the unique and exciting 'Patterns of Power'.
