About the Book

'Someone Up There Doesn't Like Me' seeks to analyse how people view and react to misfortune and offers guidance on how it should be dealt with in the light of the strong faith of God possessed by the author. Myerscough claims that bad things happen when the '...flow of God's goodness is being obstructed'. He strongly disagrees with the view of some religious people who see misfortune as punishment for sin. Is our God so cruel that He would mete out punishment on children for the sins of their parents? Ideas like these are instrumental in turning people away from God. When God created the world He didn't make it risk-free. How would we grow and develop without risks? When God created us, He gave us the gift of free will and independent thought so that we could choose whether to take risks or not and decide how to handle misfortune. We are free to make bad as well as good choices; we are accountable for our own decisions and must deal with the consequences. Instead of reacting to misfortune and evil with anger, denial, indifference, self-pity, resignation or stoicism, we should recognise that bad things happpen and work to transform them into something positive. We should see each setback as an opportunity to start afresh and learn from our experiences. And we should pray more, not for miracles, material things or for life the way we want it, but for the strength and courage to cope with whatever life throws at us. A strong belief in the after-life will also help us to bear misfortune but should never make us apathetic and complacent. This book has been written intelligently by a man with an unwavering Christian belief in a benevolent God. Some of his views could be fuel for heated debate with those of a different faith. However, it is a book that should bring immense comfort to anyone who has experienced misfortune. The author's message is clear: direct your initial anger and frustration at the cause of the misfortune and then, when those emotions have subsided, take it by the throat, overcome it and make it work in your favour with a strong faith that God is on your side.
