About the Book

Historic and often picturesque ruins have been an integral part of the British landscape for many centuries. They have been an influencing factor in the development of art, architecture and landscape management. However, it is only in relatively recent years that people have become interested in what these ruins could reveal about the nation's past. This book marks a return to an interest in ruins that Michael Thompson had when he wrote on the subject in 1981. This time the interest is in the development of an active relationship between the public and ruins as to how they can be preserved and used, and Thompson looks at developments throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and figures such as Richard Colt Hoare, Ruskin, Morris, Lubbock, and Lord Curzon and the roles they played in the treatment and preservation of ruins.

Table of Contents:
Chapter 1: Introduction, Chapter 2: Awareness - Colt Hoare, Conscience and Restoration, Chapter 3: Ruskin and Morris, Science, Chapter 4: Lubbock and Pitt-Rivers, Imperial Responsibilities, Chapter 5: Curzon, State Preservation, Intelligibility, Conclusion, APPENDIX - Viollet-le-Duc on Restoration, Lubbock and Darwin, The 1882 Act - its Schedule, List of Relevant Acts, Castle and Monastic Ruins in Care in the 1970s, International Charter on Preservation of Monuments, Venice, 1964.

About the Author :
After infancy in India and boarding school in England he won history exhibition to Pembroke College, Cambridge. Interrupted by military service including a spell in Northern Ireland went on to do a Phd. on the Mesolithic in Spain. Subsequently stated as Inspector of Ancient Monuments in 1954 and spent 20 years in London and 10 in Cardiff as Head of Ancient Monuments in Wales. Arising from an interest in prehistoric technology did several translations from Russian published in the 1960s. The discovery of field notebooks of Pitt-Rivers as Inspector led to articles and eventually a short biography. Meanwhile work on Ministry guidebooks and monuments led to a book on Ruins for British Museum Publications and after retirement a series of books on medieval buildings, especially castles and abbeys. This book is a return to the subjects of ruins prompted by a revival of interest in restoration.
