About the Book

A diverse collection of 20 short stories portraying various characters as they face deep soul-searching changes in their personal lives, and as they try to come to terms with life's restrictions, suffering and tragedy.

Review :
Rob Mimpriss is obviously an author who likes to plan ahead. Reasoning, his first collection of short stories, is to be one of three collections – and the following two already have titles. As someone who finds it difficult to plan what he's up to on Sunday week, I find this all rather alien but can't help being impressed. Interestingly, for an author with such a sense of what's to come, his style is immediate and present. The twenty stories are really snapshots of personal relationships, interactions that are for one reason or another reaching crisis points. There is little drama, though. Mimpriss explores the end of a marriage in the same way as he looks at a teenager’s quiet rebellion against her father's insistence she practice her oboe. Gently. These are tales from Wales. We are left in no doubt of where the geographic and historic centre of each is. At the same time, despite an obvious wish to create something uniquely Welsh, there is a universality to experiences and reactions of all we meet, that means we could be reading about the end of a relationship on a holiday in France, an argument over a will in small town America, or family argument around a table in Ireland. This could have been played on, creating an outward-looking collection that would have pulled people in, rather than one that does at times feeling a little exclusive. Maybe this was Mimpriss's intention. The clarity and surety of his writing make me suspect little was left undecided. Mimpriss could be described as a quiet writer with a loud voice. It's good to know he's planning ahead – I'll be listening for more.
