About the Book

Cv/VAR Volume 29, Objects, presents one hundred drawings by Philip James which explore the discreet activity of found objects, disclosed in the confusion of random elements of a domestic space.Complementary texts provide a counterpoint of observations of social and interior life. 'The studies became a journal of intrigues; the small -scale pencil sketches picked up on unexpected alignments, in the scatter of clothes, bedding, bags, cushions, parked shoes, kitchen utensils, bottles, jars, creams.Drawing is the most direct way to catch the transient moment, the loose layers of line and tone allow objects to breathe with each other and their setting. There is also a sense of breathing through the medium, ideally what art should do - to create a benign space to grow through.' Philip James 10/03
