About the Book

The entertaining autobiography of chartered engineer Joanna Greenlaw, recording diverse experiences during extensive sea travels, together with comments on the demise of the British empire in India, marine historical research, antiquarian horology, clocks and art, dairy farming in Carmarthenshire and gender change. 62 black-and-white photographs.

Review :
This pleasant, vivid depiction of Joanna Greenlaw’s varied and interesting life invites the reader on a tour of old colonial India, voyages across the sea and even a brief period of dairy farming in Wales. It flits from age to age, detailing her formative years as a male naval radio officer and briefly commenting on her gender change, an adjustment which left her free to concentrate on her various interests. Never much delving beneath the emotional surface, what this book lacks in insight into aspects like the detrimental British rule of colonial India, it makes up for in charming tales of her speckled life, a wonderfully painted picture of just how the echelons of society lived and her desire for the return, in some respects, of these golden days of society. As it unashamedly leaves ‘deliberate gaps, mostly of a personal nature’, one does not feel fully able to explore the inner conscious of this amiable individual, but her exploits and achievements are detailed in full, alongside scores of revealing postcards and expertly taken black and white photographs. What really seems to underlie this writing, however, is a sense of insecurity, perhaps symbolised by her adult years filled with dynamic and ever-changing social situations and a lack of many watertight friendships or relationships. However, this uncertainty is clearly a real focus and vivid reason for the book itself, and these timid ghosts are clearly exorcised in the last chapter where Joanna treats the reader to a run-down of her recent life, the books she has published and the fascinating lecture techniques of her seminars on Swansea clocks.
