Contains 93 contributions from psychoanalysts and psychotherapists world wide, on a variety of topics around clinical issues, ethics and professional conduct within the consulting room, including adult and parent-infant therapy. A second section applies psycho-dynamic understanding beyond the couch - including work with victims of violence and trauma, and studies of organisations and academia. The book includes a unique section called 'Between Sessions' on how therapists choose to replenish their mind-body matrix, and a final one 'The Embodied Therapist', dealing with issues of self-preservation, maintenance and sustenance for these professionals whose lifestyle is both sedentary and tension-absorbing. Over 90 eminent psychoanalysts and psychotherapists world wide, were invited to contribute prose, poems or art forms which reflect their own current clinical preoccupations or creative activities between sessions. As a result, these thoughtful writings are passionate and informal, unusually depicting the therapist as worldly and embodied. Addressed is the psychosomatic toll of being a therapist, remaining receptive to one's own preconscious feelings and to those of the patient, absorbing and containing raw and often painful emotions yet to be processed. The concluding section of the book is a useful compilation of feedback from many therapists on issues of practical management, daily maintenance, replenishment and self-preservation in what Freud called an 'impossible profession'. Between Sessions & Beyond the Couch includes over 90 contributions from analysts and psycho-therapists world wide, on their work both behind and beyond the couch, with unique emphasis on replenishment between sessions.
