About the Book

The soul searching over the riots in Bradford has been intense, but perhaps now it is time to move forward? Young people are the future. What do they think? How do young people in Bradford differ from young people in other parts of Britain? What do they think should be done to help them fulfill their potential? This report details the attitudes and experiences of young people in Bradford. It poses questions relevant to their lives as they move towards adulthood and independence. How do they see the future? What kind of careers advice have they had? Has it been any good? What help do they need to move towards independence? In a study begun in 2000, young people participated, advised and undertook interviews, providing data via questionnaires. Raw emotion and solid good sense sit side by side in their contributions. The project, taking place through one of the most troubled times in Bradford's recent history, provides data from a local sample of 308 and compares this with a national sample of well over 2,000. It addresses the aspirations of young Bradfordians in parallel to those of the rest of the UK. Do they believe they will reach their goals? The work aims to prove crucial reading for anyone living or working in Bradford, or working with young people, as well as for those from neighbouring communities and those with similar demographic make-ups.
