About the Book

The biography of Reverend Evan Jones (1836-1915), powerful minister of Moriah chapel, Caernarfon, industrious politician and newspaper editor of 'Y Goleuad', 'Yr Amseroedd' and 'Y Traethodydd'. 22 black-and-white illustrations.

Review :
I’r genhedlaeth bresennol, y ‘capel a losgwyd’ yw Moreia, Caernarfon! Ond aiff Harri Parri â ni yn ôl at y gweinidog cyflogedig cyntaf a fu yno, a hwnnw'n dipyn o gymeriad. Bellach fe benelinwyd y gweinidog a’r pregethwr o gae chwarae’r genhedlaeth hon – does dim lle iddo yn y tîm. Ond fe gâi pob gweinidog Ymneilltuol gofiant erstalwm a bu rhai yn darparu’n ddyfal ddefnyddiau brolgar i’w cofianwyr! Yr oedd patrymau sefydlog i’r cofiannau hyn a’u gwna i gyd mor debyg i’w gilydd. Er i Evan Jones ddarparu’n helaeth yn ei ‘Atgofion’ am gofiant swmpus, bu raid iddo aros am bron i gan mlynedd. Yn wir, mi ddylai ddiolch gan i Harri Parri benderfynu mai ‘Evan Jones – yr hen barchedig’ fyddai testun ei Ddarlith Davies a draddododd yn y Gymanfa Gyffredinol, Eglwys Bresbyteraidd Cymru. Yn iaith Penllyn, dyma chwip o gofiant! Yr oedd Evan Jones yn gryn gymeriad, a phwy yn well na Harri Parri i olrhain ei hynt a’i helynt? Mae ynddo gyfuniad o lenor gwreiddiol â dawn wych i ddweud ac i greu stori, ac ymchwilydd trylwyr. Yn wir, mae’r cofiant yn darllen fel nofel a daw hen bregethwr o Oes Fictoria yn gymeriad byw a edmygwn. Pwy ond Harri fyddai’n claddu gwrthrych y cofiant yn y frawddeg agoriadol. Wedi gorymdaith fer trwy dref Caernarfon i’r stesion ar elorgerbyd, angladd trên a gafodd Evan Jones. Mae’r awdur yn brysio o’r angladd i ddweud stori anghyffredin y gŵr a gladdwyd ym Machynlleth ddechrau Hydref 1915. Dyn papur newydd oedd Evan Jones a feiddiodd, ymhlith pethau eraill, ddwyn allan y Punch Cymraeg cyntaf yn Oes Fictoria i blith Ymneilltuwyr cul a oedd yn rheoli byd ac eglwys. Bu’n olygydd yr Amseroedd ac ef a achubodd y Goleuad, papur wythnosol y Methodistiaid. Ei weledigaeth ef a’i lafur a sefydlodd y Llyfrfa yng Nghaernarfon, a ddeil yn gofgolofn iddo. Yr oedd Evan Jones yn Rhyddfrydwr brwd a chyfrifid ef yn rheng flaen areithwyr y dydd; yn wir, byddai raid i Lloyd George godi’i sanau wrth rannu llwyfan ag ef. Dyma’r cymeriad a ddaeth yn weinidog i’r Cathedral anghydffurfiol crand yng Nghaernarfon ym 1875. Arhosodd yn anifail politicaidd, gyda gwres diwygiad 1859 lond ei enaid, ond yn wahanol i’r rhelyw o’i gyfoedion mynnai Evan Jones droi pob profiad ysbrydol yn weithgarwch cymdeithasol. Bu ei weinidogaeth a’i bregethu yn awyr iach i dref Caernarfon ac i gyfundeb y Methodistiaid a fu dan awdurdod haearnaidd John Elias am gyhyd. Mae’n anodd credu sut y ffitiodd cymeriad o’i fath yn un o eglwysi mwyaf y Methodistiaid. Bu’n weinidog ymroddedig ac yn ddiarbed yn ei ofal a’i wasanaeth i braidd Moreia. Llwyddodd Harri Parri i wasgu llun godidog o weinidog gwahanol i ffrâm gyfyng o gan tudalen heb golli dim. Y mae’n argraffiad gorffenedig ac atyniadol gan Wasg y Bwthyn.
