About the Author :
Mark Griffiths has a lifelong interest in orchids; in early childhood he came under the tutelage of the legendary orchid grower Peter McKenzie Black. After Magdalen College, Oxford he moved next to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Kew, until his appointment, aged twenty-five, as Editor of The New Royal Horticultural Society Dictionary of Gardening. At four volumes and over four million words. The Dictionary is the largest single work on gardening yet published. Since it appeared in 1992, Mark Griffiths has written several books and has received the Garden Writers' Guild Special Award for a Work of Outstanding Excellence. Griffiths contributes articles and papers to numerous journals and, since 2000, has been Horticultural Correspondent of The Times. Griffiths is editorial consultant and sometimes editor of The Orchid Review, the world's longest-running publication devoted to orchids. He sits on various committees of the Royal Horticultural Society and is a Fellow and Council Member of the Linnean Society.

Review :
From the Royal Horticultural Society's archives comes a fantastic collection of orchid prints, paintings and watercolours. The Lindley library holds a large collection of botanical artwork and these wonderful works of art have been specially commissioned by the Society's Orchid Committee since 1897. Mark Griffiths, orchid specialist and author, has gleaned from them these floral masterpieces. Long sought after by man, orchids fascinate all who see them, often ensnaring the onlooker into a lifelong passion. Their beauty comes in many forms from the octupus-like petals of Brassia vernicosa to the butterfly imitators vandas; from the blotched leaves of Promenaea Dinah Albright to the vibrant hues of odonotoglossums. The pitcher-like bowls of phragmipediums and paphiopedilums and their tail-like petals give them a dark, mysterious appeal. The frilly cattleyas and tulip orchids such as Anguloa cliftonii demonstrate the vast range of shape and form amongst the genus. From commonly available hybrids to the more covetous and extremely expensive rarer varieties, orchids are available to all and, once hooked, they rarely let their prey go. This beautifully illustrated reference work is a must for all orchid-lovers be they amateur or professional. More than a coffee table book, this is a comprehensive history of the genus, the plant discoverers and the plant's popularity. Botanically correct, the illustrations speak for themselves, highlighting the fascination the genus has held for centuries and no doubt for centuries to come. - Lucy Watson
