About the Book

Process modelling is plagued with complexity, difficulty in understanding and communication problems, which this book addresses by applying a standard modelling notation to these issues. Consider a magician performing a card trick - to the audience the process is easy to follow, but impossible to replicate. To duplicate it, it is necessary to understand several different views of the trick, not just what the audience sees. A full understanding will require knowledge about magic and sleight-of-hand, insight into the hidden complexities behind the trick and familiarity with the mis-communication devices employed by magicians. Process modelling is essential to understanding and improving how businesses operate. The challenge is in creating an accurate and concise model of these processes. Process modelling that is overly simplified, and narrow-minded leads to inaccurate, inefficient or entirely inappropriate process definitions. A Pragmatic Guide to Business Process Modelling goes beyond the input/output flowchart-style view of processes used by many organizations. Jon Holt's techniques, using a range of diagrams, give different views of the business: from high level overviews, to a single colleague's perspective. A Pragmatic Guide to Business Process Modelling helps you specify, visualize, and document your business processes, so that you can analyse future requirements and design solutions that meet them. It applies visual modelling techniques to process modelling, using the Unified Modelling Language (UML), an ISO standard which is used increasingly by businesses globally. Jon Holt's practical approach to business modelling provides insight and clarity for business people, whilst providing information sufficiently detailed to develop the requirements of any kind of computer information system. A Pragmatic Guide to Business Process Modelling features: All aspects of process modelling from process analysis to process documentation. Examples of processes: procedures, standards, work instructions and guidelines. Detailed case studies from a variety of industries. Guidance for directors and managers on business process modelling to improve processes, productivity and profitability. Process Modelling has become a core competency for anyone involved in managing or influencing change; whether improving communications, reducing an organization's complexity, managing risk or supporting good corporate governance.
