A collection of 28 walks exploring Ruabon Mountain, including the Clywedog Valley and Hope Mountain. Includes clear maps and directions with references to local historical and natural points of interest.

Review :
Lying to the west of Wrexham and north of Llangollen is a wild open historic upland landscape, with heather covered Ruabon Mountain at its centre. It is now part of the new Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. On its western edge extending south from Worlds End is one of the most spectacular limestone escarpments in Britain. Further north is Cyrn-y-Brain with its prominent telecommunication masts. Its northern side includes Llandegla Forest, Esclusham and Minera Mountains, bordered by the Clywedog valley, Minera, Gwynfryn, Bwlchgwyn and Coedpoeth. To the east the moorland extends towards Rhos and Penycae, becoming undulating farmland. From Minera Lead Mines Visitor Centre and Country Park, the waymarked Clywedog Valley Trail runs east via Bersham Ironworks to the National Trusts Erddig Country Park at the outskirts of Wrexham. Extending north east from Bwlchgwyn is the wooded Nant y Ffrith valley and attractive upland pasture leading to Llanfynydd, Waun-y-Llyn Country Park and Hope Mountain overlooking Caergwrle, with its ancient castle. This diverse area of upland and valleys has been shaped by man since prehistoric times. Its considerable mineral wealth has been exploited since the Romans, with lead mining, limestone quarrying, coal mining and iron-making playing an important role in the industrial development of north-east Wales. The more rugged moorland of Ruabon Mountain, managed for sheep grazing and later grouse shooting, is complemented by undulating pastureland, wooded valleys, forest, reservoirs and estate land at Erddig. Together they provide a fascinating area to explore. The 28 walks in this book, which range from an easy 1 mile stroll around an upland country park to an exhilarating 10 mile walk exploring the dramatic limestone escarpment of Eglwyseg Mountain, are well within the capability of most people. Many routes contain shorter walk options.
