About the Book

Liam is growing up in an Irish Catholic quarter of Liverpool in the 1930s, the youngest of three children. While he is still at school, trying to rid his seven-year-old head of the wicked thoughts that stand between him and the salvation of his immortal soul, his older brother and sister are working, adding their wage packets to the household funds. Money is tight but the family is a happy one; Liam's mother is caring but devout and his father is a responsible working man, proud to be employed when so many others are not. But hard times have hit the Liverpool Docks and Liam's father loses his job. Helpless, embittered and determined to find someone to blame, he joins the local fascists with tragic consequences. This is a child's-eye view of a family free-fall into poverty during the Depression, enriched by the irony and naive detail of a small boy's perspective.

About the Author :
Jimmy McGovern is one of the most prolific contemporary writers for television and film, best-known for the Granada series Cracker and the award-winning film Priest. This is the first time his work has been published. Liam is directed by acclaimed film-maker Stephen Frears.

Review :
"'What's the moral of Liam? I think it is this: when you attack people for what they are, rather than what they do, you destroy everything of beauty in the world. I've written bigger things than Liam, more important things too, but I've not written anything so deeply felt and personal.' Jimmy McGovern"
