About the Book

This text explains the teaching and aquisition of translated-related skills and knowledge. It uses a social-constructivist theory to critique traditional teaching methods of translator education and proposes alternatives to the teacher-based method. The book provides examples from the authors own classroom experience in translator education and foreign language teaching. Classroom case studies are used to illustrate the authors method, such as, introductory courses in translation studies, project based translation practice courses and naturalistic foreign language learning classes for student translators. The book is aimed at translator educators and program administrators, but should be of interest to anyone interested in translation.

Table of Contents:
Chapter 1 Translation and Translator Education Fields in Flux; Chapter 2 Rethinking Approaches to Translator Education; Chapter 3 Key Principles of Social-constructivist Education; Chapter 4 On Instruction and Construction in the Classroom; Chapter 5 Initiation through Dialogue; Chapter 6 Authentic Experience and Learning in a Translation Exercise Class; Chapter 7 Knowledge Construction and the Translator’s Workstation; Chapter 8 Assessment and the Emergence of Translator Competence; Chapter 9 From Dead Bodies and Talking Heads to Holistic Second Language Acquisition in the Classroom; conclusion A Conclusion … and a Beginning;

Review :
... provides potential blueprints for ... introductory and project-based workshops, translation assessment and the introduction of computers in translation classroom ... stimulating reading for members of all parts of the translator training profession, as well as for potential clients wishing to establish a link to the translator training scene. (Karen Leube, The Translator) ... a cogent and highly stimulating argument in favour of a change away from traditional objectivist models ... to an approach which is more genuinely conducive to learner development. (Robert Neather, Translation Quarterly)
