About the Book

Since the introduction of minimally invasive surgery, with its ability to access organs through small incisions, the number of applications of the technique has steadily increased. The term minimal access surgery now encompasses a variety of techniques including fibre-optic endoscopy and transanal endoscopic microsurgery as well as the well-documented laparoscopic and thoracoscopic approaches for a variety of conditions. Advances in technology now mean that, in the majority of cases, a minimalist approach is a feasible alternative to the more conventional option of open surgery. Written by an international group of experts, Minimal Access Surgery in Oncology is an authoritative, critical assessment of the application of minimally invasive surgery in the well circumscribed area of oncologic surgery which highlights the key pitfalls and controversies associated with all commonly used techniques and provides a balanced view of the benefits and drawbacks of each. This book is intended for surgeons and Oncologists in training and in practice.

Review :
"In this book, 27 international experts give a scientific appraisal of how minimal-access cancer surgery can be performed. Thirteen chapters constitute a concisely written book in a most readable style, accompanied by good illustrations and photographic material. The reference lists are complete and up to date. The book covers a wide array of different tumour types, although the chapter on endoscopic diagnostics and management fails to mention endoscopic ultrasonography. There is an excellent chapter on the impact of laparoscopy on the biological and immune aspects of cancer, with a long list of recent studies. Questions concerning the adequacy of resection, the incidence of port-site metastasis arid tumour recurrence are discussed with special reference to prospective, randomised trials." - Review published in: Oncology in Practice 3/99: p.23 Reviewed by Dr Alessandro Wildisen and Professor Felix Harder, Abteilung fur Chirurgie der Universitat Basel Kantonsspital Basel, Switzerland "It would be a useful library reference book and will find acceptance from practising surgeons, trainee surgeons, research workers and possibly some oncologists." - Review published in: Journal of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh 1998; 43: October 365-368: p. 367 Reviewed by Sami M. Shimi Department of Surgery Ninewells Hospital and Medical School Dundee, UK "The authors make an effort to provide the interested reader with an admirably concise but comprehensive overview of the current knowledge about minimal access surgery in surgical oncology. For all surgeons, but also all physicians treating cancer patients, this book is a clear and updated reference work regarding minimal access techniques in surgical oncology." - Review published in: Annals of Oncology 1998; 9: p.1150 Reviewed by U.Th. Laffer Biel "In conclusion I found this book readable, containing good illustrations and an exhaustive review of the literature. It is up to date and would be useful to those interested in better understanding the role of minimal access surgery in oncology." - Review published in: Canadian Journal of Surgery Volume 42, No.1, Feb 1999 Reviewed by Sarkis Meterissian, MD CM, MSc Department of Surgery Royal Victoria Hospital Montreal, Quebec Canada
